Preview IDW Publishing’s Final 10th Doctor Comics

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Remember when Doctor Who comics were covered here fairly regularly? That sort of faded from the forefront when it became more and more difficult to track down IDW Publishing’s solicitations and previews. I guess having a rabid fanbase just isn’t enough these days. Just for today though, we return to those thrilling days of yesteryear with the September and October solicitations for the final two issues of IDW Publishing’s Doctor Who comics featuring David Tennant’s incarnation as the Doctor.

The Monday Mashup

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Here we are: two days before the start of Comic Con International: San Diego and all systems are go! Unfortunately, due to poor planning, I’ve only got a pass for Thursday’s activities, so my Comic Con experience will be more limited this year. Undaunted, I will find a nice sidewalk cafe on Friday and do a fair amount of people watching. But, you may be asking, is there anything I’m looking forward to on Thursday? Of course! As noted in my previous blog entry, Look Around You, the quirky British send up of children’s educational programs, is having a signing at BBC America’s booth (#3629). That evening, BBC America is hosting the premiere of Being Human and the two-part Doctor Who finale. Both screenings will be taking place in Room 6DE. Get in line early, folks.

IDW Publishing is also selling a Doctor Who San Diego exclusive at their booth, an exclusive photo cover featuring David Tennant as the 10th Doctor. Here is a preview:

Click over to IDW Publishing’s full San Diego rundown to see what is happening at their booth.

Of course, no trip to Comic Con would be complete without a review of their list of exclusive toys, statues, shirts, and whatever else a fan could think of to decorate their personal labyrinth. Click over to Comic Con’s list of exlusives to see all the offerings. Remember, best to buy them now at list price rather than on eBay later… Personally, I’m looking forward to Entertainment Earth’s Venture Bros. line of action figures.

Doctor Who fans must be looking forward to the series five finale airing Saturday on BBC America. “The Big Bang” concludes Steven Moffat’s first season as showrunner since taking over from Russell T Davies for the 2010 season. The Doctor is gone, the TARDIS has been destroyed, and the universe is collapsing. The only hope for all of reality is a little girl who still believes in stars… Here’s the official trailer:

For those who have seen part one of the finale “The Pandorica Opens”, click over to Bleeding Cool and read Rich Johnston’s top ten thoughts of the episode. Then at the conclusion of “The Big Bang”, click over to read Rich’s ten thoughts about the finale.

And try not to think about Matt Smith leaving at the end of the 2011 series…

In addition to Doctor Who, Steven Moffat has also been involved in revisiting UK’s other iconic figure: Sherlock Holmes. The new series stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the great detective and Martin Freeman (The Office, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) as John Watson. Here’s the trailer:

So, before I depart for the West coast, I leave you with the one thing that everyone thinks of when they think of Comic Con:

See you in San Diego!
