The BBC debuted an image showing the new Doctor’s outfit, ending months of speculation about his clothing choice. The picture, showing Matt Smith as the Doctor and Karen Gillan as new companion April Pond (and not River Song, as some had speculated), depicts Smith in a tweed jacket and bow tie. Gone are the one-stars that had become as iconic to the Doctor as Tom Baker’s scarf.
And that brings up an issue with the new Doctor’s garb: it’s like Peter Davison following up Tom Baker’s defining, iconic costume with a cricket outfit and celery. Tennant’s pin-strip suits had become enormously popular and replacing that look would be difficult at best. At least the producers learned a lesson from Colin Baker. Here’s to Matt Smith and Karen Gillan as the new Doctor and April Pond.
